Resident Industrial Fellow Program

The Resident Industrial Fellow (RIF) program gives direct access to CDR's multicultural, multidisciplinary research environment. Confronted with rapidly evolving design, development, and manufacturing enterprise technologies, real solutions are found through direct participation in both targeted and on-going research in our laboratories:
Design Research Lab
Haptics and Dextrous Manipulation Lab
Dynamic Design Lab
Engineering Education Lab

The RIF program at CDR was created to promote personal collaboration between corporate staff and their academic counterparts, to develop new enterprise research and development tools and a deeper understanding of the technical culture that produces new products.

Corporate staff from research, development, manufacturing, and management sectors are invited to work with CDR faculty, staff, and PhD candidates at the interface between product-driven corporate R&D and process-driven academic research.

Resident Fellows are provided with office space at the Center for Design Research, in the center of the Stanford University Campus and immediately adjacent to the Mechanical Engineering Research Labs, which houses research in areas ranging from controls, to nanotechnology, to biomechanical engineering. Fellows receive the full support of CDR adminstrative, technical, and research staff. Additionally, Fellows have access to Stanford University's extensive library system, as well as to all athletic and recreational facilities.

At CDR, projects include a combination of engineering design, design tool development, and design process research. Your collaboration in any or all of these areas is eagerly welcomed. Projects generally last from 6 months to 2 years. Based on an initial proposal, the research team is expected to refine the problem definition, develop prototypes, and deliver a functional pre-beta product. Intellectual property rights are shared between the University and the corporate sponsor.
