The Stanford Center for Design Research is a community of scholars
focused on understanding and augmenting engineering design innovation
and design education. We are dedicated to facilitating individual
creativity, understanding the team design process, and developing
advanced tools and methods that promote superior design and manufacturing
of products. Affiliated Research Labs are headed by Professors Larry
Leifer (Director), Mark Cutkosky, Sheri Sheppard, and Chris Gerdes
We develop concepts and technical solutions for design thinking,
concurrent engineering, distributed collaborative design, design
knowledge capture, indexing and re-use. We focus on methods and
tools for improving the design of specific engineering systems,
with research in structural integrity evaluation and system modeling,
virtual design environments, biomimetic robots, vehicle dynamics
and driver assistance systems.
Sponsors and partners in CDR research and projects include NASA,
Toshiba Corporation, United States Department of Energy, DaimlerChrysler,
IBM, Boeing, Lockheed, Hewlett-Packard, Ford Motor Company, General
Motors, Intel, Apple Computers, General Electric, Sekisui, Mitsui,
Mettler AG, Sun Microsystems, NTT, Matsushita, Cisco Systems,
National Science Foundation, Office of Naval Research, Bosch,
Paramount Bed, DARPA, BMW, Komatsu, NEC, and Mitsubishi Electric.
