Schachenhaus 9-10 Jul 2013
Schachenhaus is a Hütte/Hut on the Wettenstein mountains near the Zugspitze. The reason it is important is that it lies directly near two tourist attractions. One is the Könighaus / Kings House: a hunting palace built by Ludwig II. A tour is mandatory. The other is the Alpine Garden with sections from mountains all ovr the world. There is really nothing else like it.
We started from Elmau at about 800 meters and reached the hut in less than the standard 2.5 hours on the signs. The hut is at 1876m - so we climbed 1076m/3530'. ( For comparison, Half Dome is 4700' above the Yosemite valley floor.) We toured the Könighaus, the Alpine Gartens, and watched the sunset over the Zugspitze mountain range.
We met some great people from Australia who had been badly informed about what they needed to stay overnight in the Hut and then cross the mountain range the next day as they planned. They had very little with them. She had a purse and they were both wearing good shoes but otherwise ill-equiped. The next morning, we hiked with them up to the Meilerhütte at 2366m/7762'. Then they left on their adventure to cross the mountains and we went back down, going down 1566m/5137' via a different path and woods.
