Notes:
My own background is in machine design and robotics, with a mix of mechanical, electrical and software design.
When I left ALCOA for graduate school I would have been the perfect ME310 student: familiar with how design is done in industry and ready to look at design in a new way.
When I visited Stanford after getting my Ph.D. I was able to see the June final presentations from the ME210 (predecessor to ME310) graduate design course. The quality amazed me -- I had never seen anything like it from student presentations.
Since coming to Stanford in 1985, I have been a coach on many ME210 projects over the years. For the last two years I have been the ME210/310 instructor, taking over from Prof. Larry Leifer.
