Musical Instrument

Project Description

Students (groups of two work nicely) create a self-running concert of at least two instruments which begins with the cutting of a string and continues for 45 seconds, at which time it ends independently. Instruments can be traditional or completely original, but they must be hand-made. The concert should be entertaining, that is, it should contain a visual component. The instruments themselves may provide the visual appeal, or there can be a visual aspect to the presentation that is independent of the functionality.

Encourage students to visit music stores as well as department stores such as Target for idea generation. The hardest part of this assignment (and one the students probably won't think about until the end) is going to be getting the instrument to start and stop in the required fashion. Stress the importance of this aspect at the beginning. There will probably be several beautifully made instruments with last-second throw-together triggers that fail.

Materials

Instructor Time

This project does not require much instructor time. Intermediate assignments, like prototype instruments or triggers, may be assigned. The day of the presentations, make sure to have a stopwatch. Grade based on functionality, creativity, visual appeal, and musical appeal.

Variations

This project is appropriate for the following variations (most are described in the section how to make design projects more meaningful):
