Structure and Organization:
- Overview of the book - editors
- History of human and machine haptics - Sheridan
- Three major sections:
1. Human haptics
2. Machine haptics
3. Human-Machine interactions
Overviews for each of these three sections will be written by the editors
with help from others. There will be approximately 10 chapters in each of
the first two sections.
- Structure of each chapter:
1. Introduction (terminology, background, etc.) ~ 2 pages
2. Status of Research (significant results) ~ 5 pages
3. Research Needs (unsolved problems and issues; challenges) (if
relevant, point out possible beneficial interactions between human and
machine haptics) ~ 2 pages
4. References (pointers to literature for a deeper study) ~ 1 page
Total length of each chapter: about 5000 words, equal to 10 book pages
(6"x9"), including figures and references.

The third section will have about 5 chapters and a subsection on
applications of human-machine interactions (Virtual environments (VE),
Teleoperation (TO), Rehabilitation). The chapters will have the same
structure as given above. The subsection will have about 15 shorter
articles (2 to 5 pages) on application areas.

1. Vision of what is to be achieved with juicy examples
2. Background: critical review of previous attempts
3. Current approaches and solutions
4. Future as you see it
5. References

Total length of each article: about 1000 to 2500 words, equal to 2 to 5
book pages (6"x9"), including figures and references.

Format for both chapters and articles: MS Word version 6.0 or higher
preferred; 12pt Courier font and double line spacing preferred. Please
avoid footnotes. (see the MIT press guidelines
for contributors of edited volumes).
