Description
In a typical internal combustion piston engine, the piston is attached
to a crank via a connecting rod, which transforms linear motion into rotary
motion. This makes sense in many arrangements, but if the sole purpose of
the IC engine is to generate electric power, this transformation is
unnecessary. By replacing the slider-crank mechanism with an electric
linear motor/generator, a vast unexplored design space is opened, in which
we gain much greater control over the motion of the piston over the course
of a cycle. Possible applications include hybrid electric vehicles and
small to medium scale electric power generation.
