Meeting Schedule for Three New Focus Groups
[ SATI Activities Journal ]
2/8/95 - 10:24 AM
I WOULD LIKE TO ANNOUNCE THE SCHEDULE OF THE FIRST MEETINGS OF
OUR THREE NEW FOCUS GROUPS.
Remember our division: (1) THE PRAXIS GROUP, whose primary
interest rests in the production of works of art (including per-
formance) that use new technologies; (2) THE ACCESS GROUP, whose
interest rests in the use of new technologies in approaching
existing works of art, including the development of hypertexts
and other media that would allow different modes of accessing
aesthetic material; and (3) THE THEORY GROUP, a group whose
interests rest in the analysis of the experiences provided by art
produced through new technologies.
THEORY: Tuesday, 24 January, 12:00 noon, Room 125 Memorial
Auditorium
ACCESS: Wednesday, 25 January, 12:00 noon, Room 125 Memorial
Auditorium
PRAXIS: Thursday, 26 January, 12:00 noon Room 125 Memorial
Auditorium
Please indicate your plans to attend by e-mail to
charles.lyons@forsythe or nan@forsythe
What follows are tentative immediate, mid-range, and long-term
objectives for each of the three groups, goals that we should
discuss and revise in our initial meetings.
PRAXIS:
1. Immediate Objective: To develop a database that contains the
range of experimental work in art using new technologies that is
taking place on the Stanford campus or in projects associated
with Stanford University. The purpose of this database would be,
at least, twofold: (1) to be able to document for the University
administration the range and quality of this kind of work that is
distributed across different departments and schools; and (2) to
provide a base of information that would allow for co-operation
and collaboration in the future.
2. Mid-Range Objective: (1) To establish a kind of clearing
house for potential projects, putting potential collaborators in
touch with each other, identifying and pursuing funding sources;
(2) to stimulate the development pf new courses in the production
of art using new technologies.
3. Long-Term Objective: To constitute a University Center for
Experimental Arts Production.
ACCESS:
1. Immediate Objective: (1) To determine what strategies are
currently being used, on campus and elsewhere, that use new tech-
nologies for working with existing works of art, visual, perform-
ing, and literary.
2. Mid-Range Objective: (1) To develop new systems of access
and analysis of existing works of art using new technologies; (2)
To publicize these systems and encourage their work in curriculum
use and development.
3. Long-Term Objective: (1) To constitute a resource center for
new systems of accessing/analyzing works of art.
THEORY:
1. Immediate Objective: To develop a current bibliography of
works that theorize art that is being generated through new tech-
nologies, and, constituting ourselves as a kind of study group.
2. Mid-Range Objective: (1) To develop an activity within the
Fall Symposium; (2) to stimulate the development of courses
addressing the theoretical analysis of new art.
3. Long-Term Objective: To establish an electronic journal that
offers work that theorizes new forms of art.
REMEMBER THE NEXT MEETING OF THE ARTS & TECHNOLOGY INITIATIVE AS
A WHOLE IS SCHEDULED FOR NOON, 2 FEBRUARY, ROOM 125 MEMORIAL
HALL.
