Larry Leifer is the Director of the Center for Design Research (CDR) at Stanford University.

A member of the Stanford faculty since 1976, he teaches a master's course in "Team-Based Product Design Development with Corporate Partners," the "Design Theory and Methodology Forum" and a freshman seminar "Designing the Human Experience: design thinking in theory and practice." He is founding director of the Stanford Center for Design Research (CDR). Special interest projects include: 1) development of a collaborative engineering environment for geographically distributed product development teams; 2) instrumentation of that environment for design knowledge capture, indexing, reuse and performance assessment; 3) development of tele-assistive robots for physically limited individuals; and 4) development of pedagogically informed technology for distributed collaborative learning. In July 1997 he was appointed Founding Director of the Stanford Learning Laboratory, Office of the President and Provost, with a mandate to explore the opportunity, and risks, associated with information technology across the university's education enterprise.

In an effort to disseminate rehabilitation technology, he co-founded the Tolfa Corporation (1989), now LingraphiCARE America, and Independence Works, Inc. (1992).
